Post Help! Marking student's essay
Hi Fellow Teachers,

Today is my first day teaching English. I haven't had any experience in marking students' essays before. I was wondering if you could help me out here.

Can you Read through my student's written work(only a small part), decide what level they are and tell me the reasons for your choice.

"Most of the people love quiet, they don't like to be in crowded enviroment if it is unneccessary. That will make them feel nervous. If you are living in a large city and you want to relax, but there are too many people on the street, that is you can’t do what you want and you can’t go to the places that you want. It will make you feel sad. That means the stress staying in your mind."

Regards,

Ben Cheng

It's hard to judge a student's level on the basis of a fragment of one essay, but they appear to be Lower to Upper Intermediate level. They have a well established vocabulary (environment, unnecessary) but are having problems with article usage (the stress) and so on.

You might find this useful. It is a short video about ways in which you can correct a student's work: Correcting Work.

The basis of the idea here is to take the class' essays as a whole and look at one or perhaps two basic errors to begin with.

It is very difficult to mark student's essay. But maybe you can base on the way your students write his/her essay.

Alot of where a student is should be based of there process and research because thats what ultimately determines a good essay and shows the students understanding.
