Post Do you think I made a big mistake?
Right after graduating college with a BA degree in Spanish, I got hired RIGHT on the spot & had an IMMEDIATE job opening for a job as an ESL teacher's assistant. But I heard they only get paid $14,000/yr. The day I was supposed to start work, I called in to quit the job right before I was supposed to come into work & moved from New Orleans, LA to NYC, NY, thinking I would have a better opportunity at increasing my Spanish fluency. In NYC, I found myself homeless & begging for food. I took the test to try to enter NYU's translating & interpreting program & failed it. But the reason why I turned down the job & moved was because of fear of losses & fear of another hurricane like Katrina. I'm now living in North Texas & am sad & depressed because I don't have a job. Many people tell me I shouldn't work because I'll lose my SSI & Social Security benefits & medical insurance & that I'll most likely not get them back. I feel like I went to college for nothing. I can't put my career to use.

Just get a job and worry about your college later.

Why are you getting SSI ?
You really want to be an unemployed welfare slacker the rest of your life ?
Apply for jobs .
NEVER quit one until you have an offer for a better one .
Quitting a job the day before you were to start was veryyyyy immature and inconsiderate .
Hopefully you have grown up but hanging around whining doesn't sound too good .

If you don't commit to acting like a real adult soon ,
You will be stuck forever in deadbeat lane . (and the poverty that goes with that life)

Yes. you did make a bid mistake. Once should not leave the first one rather having it at one's disposal should try to look for better as something is better than nothing.

Even if it was a mistake, don't let it keep you down. Just keep looking for a job and don't give up until you find one. You didn't go to college for nothing. It will all pay off for you in the end.

I really don't think you made a big mistake. After all Katrina more or less ruined New Orleans anyway; would you have still had a job there after Katrina? Many people did not.

I am sorry things did not work out in NY. It is hard to make it there without help.

You did not go to college for nothing. Can you check into the same type of job in Texas? I am sure they have many ESL positions available there. I think there are ESL positions all over. I lived in Alaska and I taught ESL for a few years.

I am probably one of the people who told you that you needed to think about losing your medical benefits. I wasn't trying to keep you "down," but when anyone has a number of health problems, insurance needs to be taken into consideration. I love my job but it has no medical insurance. Yesterday I spend almost two weeks pay at the doctor's office because I have become ill. I would have been better off working for half the pay at a job with medical insurance.

Many people on here just want the best for you. Good luck.
