I'm currently in college to become an English teacher (likely for high school students) and am thinking about getting a tattoo which I have always wanted which meant a lot to me. If i get it, it will be on my wrist in very small script saying "La vita è bella" with a small heart that becomes a butterfly.

What would your school think of this during the hiring process? What are your schools policies against/for teachers having tattoos and/or piercings? I once had an english teacher who was allowed to have a small diamond stud in her nose in high school.. so i know there must be some sort of exceptions

A small tasteful tattoo should not be a problem. For your interview, I would either wear a long sleeved shirt or large bracelet to cover it up. After you are hired, it shouldn't be a big deal unless you teach in a very conservative or very small school. I have a lizard on my ankle and I have never had any problems with it. I just always wear pants to my interviews. :-)

It doesn't sound like a problem. In general, any job will have the same answer. Teachers are people, too.

If you're worried about prejudices towards tattoos or piercings, I would get the job first and then get the tattoo.

You're interviewing with people from an older generation who wouldn't find that as acceptable as people your age.

Why risk it?

Some private schools or more conservative areas of the country may have issues. You cannot generalize on what schools will do - it is entirely up to the hiring person and their outlook.

There are no laws.

body art is more accepted than in years past - but some of the hiring people are from an older generation.
