Should I better my Cantonese or learn Mandarin?
I speak Cantonese proficiently, and reading/writing is minimal (due to lack of practise)
Now I am at University, my tutor told me to learn Mandarin as this would help me in the future should I wish to work abroad and with job opportunities.
I know that the majority of China speaks Mandarin - but as I already have a good grounding of Cantonese, should I improve on this instead, or am I just being lazy?

Dear hippyJu,
Have you considered doing both?
If I were you I would learn Mandarin because it is both the Standard Language of the PRC and Taiwan.
It would however be also a good opportunity for you to brush up your Cantonese especially if you're interested to visit Hong Kong.
The Cantonese language uses more and different Chinese characters than Mandarin. I don't mean Traditional versus Simplified, but a complete other set of characters.
Do Mandarin and casually learn some Cantonese-specific characters. With both languages in your pockets, you'll go far!
Good luck!

Mandarin will be more important, and you'll really need it if you're gonna study abroad. If you learn Mandarin and your english too, yo might just earn more by becoming a language teacher in China!! XD

Most of ppl use Mandarin. At Malaysia, the business student should choose either Mandarin or Arabic and not Cantonese!

mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world. I would suggest that you learn it. I have been in classes for years trying to learn putonghua ,I'm canadian, with many other cantonese speakers.

Re: Should I better my Cantonese or learn Mandarin?
I would encourage you to learn Mandarin. Mandarin will continue to grow in importance and if you can use it it will be a great advantage. I believe Mandarin writing is the same as Cantonese and so it seems that you will need to learn to read in Mandarin and pronounce it. Enjoy yourself. I wish I could learn Mandarin but its looks too big a challenge.
