I am just about to burst into tears. I have started to sub, and started getting my foot in the door. Long story, but I am just so depressed. The principal herself told me that I am amazing with the children, but where is my job? I think she wants me to have my ESL and even then I am not sure she is going to hire me. I take it June 6 and I hope I pass!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got my first teaching job two days after school started.

It all depends on when teachers decide to retire/run screaming into the woods/get sick, etc. Most hiring is done mid-late summer.

Watch for new schools opening these create lots of openings in both the new school and existing schools when teachers transfer.

Another thing to look at is your certification how many openings are in your area? I have dual certification ( science and English) and that was a problem. If I'd had science and math there were a dozen openings because the folks doing the scheduling expected science teachers to be able to teach math.

So if your certification is too narrow there may not be any slots.

Subbing is a good way to get to know the principals and schools in a district. I did a long term sub at the end of one year and got a teaching job the next.

Hang in there, prime hiring season is coming but be ready to expand your search area.

You're in the middle of the school year; there are not a lot of openings until the end of the year (I know it's NEARLY there). At this point, the school admin folks don't always KNOW who's going to leave and who's going to stay. Also, there are situations where they can't fill a job for sure until the end of the year when contracts are officially up for renewal. Worst case, in August, you'll probably find yourself with offers coming out your ears - they do that every year, with people who suddenly decide not to come back.

I just graduated with an education degree with honors from Texas Tech, and I just got a job. I had applied several places to no avail until I contacted a principal personally. I now have my dream job. Think about where you want to teach, and contact the principal. I was totally depressed up until I got hired. I feel your pain 100%. Take your test and you'll be fine. Many principals don't hire till June when the current teachers put in a lot of their notices. Best of luck.
