Post What kind of teacher should i become?
Hello people.

So i've decided that i want to become a teacher, but i have three options and i don't know which is best and makes the most money.

ESL (high school) - how much does an ESL teacher make?

English (high school)

or Elementary school (4th or 5th grade). how much does an elementary school teacher make?

the higher the better! ESL teacher but more pressure! elementary teacher's paid is lower than the both options but it is less pressure! in australia, primary school teachers' paid r higher than the high school teacher's coz for them, basic is the most important!

Of course it all depends where you teach, location and salary are linked! But you would probably have the easiest time getting a job as a ESL teacher, then English, then elementary. There are so many more elementary ed people than secondary.

Most schools are part of "joint unified districts", meaning that the elementary and high schools are part of the same school district. Your pay will be based on your years of teaching experience and the number of upper division units you've earned once you receive your bachelor's degree. The pay scale is identical for elementary and high school teachers. The pay scales are public record. Check out the scale for your local district. They will vary from district to district. Do some volunteer work and figure out what age you prefer working with.

I feel someone can not tell you who to become - you need to make an assessment by writing down and doing pros and cons.

Its not the money its what you do for the children

All the teachers you mentioned belong to the same union so they all get paid exactly the same. Actually I take that back, Elementary might be on a slightly lower scale. If you do ESL, you'll never be out of work.

Try ESL..more jobs in that area....
English at the high school level aren't as populous as other secondary jobs like Science or Math...
As far as Elementary, most general ed jobs are obsolete and unless you are a bilingual teacher, or work in special ed at the elementary level, you are going to have a hard time finding a job.

It depends on where you teach and what your background is. If you teach in a city your are more likely to make more money but it depends on what that school district offers. Some school districts pay all their teachers the same amount, whether or not they teach in elementary school or high school. Some school districts do pay high school teachers more. If you have a masters you will get paid more. To teach elementary school you will need to teach all subjects in most cases. To teach English in high school you will need to have a degree in English. An ESL teacher makes more money then a regular teacher but it is very hard to find work because no one ever leaves their ESL position so you have to wait for people to retire and not every school even needs an ESL teacher. I hope this helps.
