What's it like to raise a western born child in Korea?
We are thinking about moving to Korea (or possibly China) to teach English. We have a 4 year old son. Initially we thought it would be great for him to learn new cultures and experience the world a bit more....but we would also like to hear from anyone who has lived in Korea with kids, and hear about the good and the bad experiences. Thanks.

Top international schools in Kr with Preschools and kindergarten.
www.sis-lhs.gyeonggi.kr : Seoul International School
known as S.I.S accredit in U.S as one of the top schools.
www.sfs.or.kr : Seoul Foreign School
Known as S.F.S accredit in U.S as one of the top schools.
www.seoul-es.pac.dodea.edu : Seoul American School
Known as S.A.S U.S school in American Base, your child
must be an American Citizen.
These are the top International schools in Korea.
There are many more international schools you can
research through internet.
Koreans have excellent education system and standard but do you really want your '4' yrs old child in hands of people with have different cultures and standard?
I'm sure as a parent you know what's best for your kid.

Re: What's it like to raise a western born child in Korea?
Sorry, can't answer specifically based on Korea, but from growing up in a SE Asian country perspective.
Born in the UK to Sri Lankan parents, they moved us back when I was just 6yrs old. I was integrated into a govt comprehensive that taught in the local language of Sinhalese. Being such a tender age, withing 6 months I had picked up the language which was a bonus. However, initially, knowing only the English language, made me isolated from the other kids and led to painful shyness that stayed with me till I moved back to the UK at age 15yrs.
With hind sight, it would have been better to be educated at an independent/International school in Sri Lanka, that followed the curriculum of the British education system. Taught in English, the transition would have been less intimidating, and then the option to return to the UK and enter Further education/university much easier.
Credit to my parent's reason for moving back to Asia, I grew up in the sun, experiencing a childhood full of carefree outdoor activities, meeting and integrating with local people and community and learning to respect, tolerate and understand a more respectful society, that sadly is fast diminishing from Britain today.
Your son will have a wonderful childhood .......................... I did.

He will be a lonely, alienated child. Without the child, I would highly recommend coming to Korea to teach English. You can make decent money and it's a fun place to live.
The international schools that were mentioned are very expensive.
